This Black History Month, we honor Ada Cecilia Collins Anderson, civil rights activist, philanthropist, arts advocate, and proud alumna of Tillotson College.

A woman of many firsts, Anderson broke barriers across Austin and Texas:
- First African American elected to the Austin Community College Board (1982)
- First Black woman to serve on a bank board in Austin
- Civil rights leader who helped organize boycotts against segregation in the 1960s
- Among the first African Americans admitted to University of Texas at Austin’s Graduate School of Library Science

Despite facing discrimination including being denied access to complete graduate fieldwork because of segregation, she never stopped pushing for equity and opportunity.

She received significant recognition from Huston-Tillotson University and the University of Texas at Austin. Huston-Tillotson awarded Ada Cecilia Collins Anderson the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for recognition of her dedicated service and generosity. The University of Texas at Austin recognized Ada’s contributions to the Austin community and beyond by presenting her with the University of Texas Community Legacy Award and the prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award.

In 2014, she made a historic $3 million gift to Huston-Tillotson University, establishing the Sandra Joy Anderson Community Health & Wellness Center in memory of her daughter. Her generosity strengthened HT’s commitment to student wellness and community health ensuring that future generations would thrive physically, academically, and spiritually.

From civil rights to education, affordable housing to the arts, Ada Anderson’s legacy reminds us that real leadership is rooted in service.

A Tillotson woman.
A community builder.
A legacy that lives on.
History. Excellence. Huston-Tillotson Pride. #HTYou
