Huston-Tillotson University Ranked #1 HBCU in Texas, #9 in the Nation by Niche

Huston-Tillotson University (HT) has been ranked the #1 Historically Black University in Texas and #9 HBCU in America in Niche’s 2027 Best Colleges rankings, placing the University among the nation’s Top 10 HBCUs.

This recognition marks another significant distinction for Austin’s first institution of higher education and reflects HT’s continued growth, visibility and momentum.

“We are pleased to see Huston-Tillotson recognized as the #1 HBCU in Texas and among the Top 10 HBCUs in the country,” said Huston-Tillotson University President and CEO Dr. Melva K. Wallace. “This distinction reflects the work of our faculty, staff and students and the progress we continue to make as a University.”

The 2027 ranking represents HT’s return to Niche’s national Top 10 after being ranked #3 among HBCUs in 2025 and #15 in 2026.

Niche’s Best Colleges rankings are based on analysis of academic, admissions, financial and student-life data from the U.S. Department of Education, along with millions of reviews from students and alumni.

For HT, the 2027 rankings add to the University’s growing national recognition and underscore its continued progress as it builds upon more than 150 years of history in Austin.

Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson University is Austin’s first institution of higher education and the city’s only Historically Black College or University.
