The Department of English and Communication prepares students to become critical thinkers, ethical communicators, and socially engaged leaders in a diverse and global society. As a cornerstone of the University’s liberal arts curriculum, the department develops students’ reading, writing, speaking, research, and analytical skills through the integrated study of language, literature, rhetoric, writing, media, and communication.
The department advances the University’s priorities of student success, academic excellence, workforce readiness, and innovation by offering rigorous, market-responsive curricula that prepare students for professional careers and graduate study in a variety of fields such as education, law, journalism, public relations, publishing, producing. public policy, marketing, health communication, and related disciplines. Through experiential learning, internships, and community engagement, students apply communication skills in real-world contexts that foster leadership, service, and civic responsibility.
In keeping with Huston–Tillotson University’s commitment to innovation, ethical leadership, and social impact, the department equips students to engage critically and responsibly with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Students learn to evaluate information, integrate digital tools thoughtfully into research and communication practices, and make informed rhetorical choices that emphasize human creativity, accountability, and integrity.
In support of Huston–Tillotson University’s aspiration to cultivate forerunners of innovation, the Department of English and Communication envisions a dynamic, inclusive learning community where language, storytelling, and media serve as catalysts for leadership, service, and social transformation.
The department strives to be a model for innovative, community-engaged humanities and communication education—one that integrates tradition with emerging practices and theory with application. We envision graduates who are confident communicators, ethical professionals, and adaptable leaders, prepared to shape discourse, address complex social challenges, and contribute meaningfully to the cultural, civic, and economic vitality of local and global communities.
