Austin, TX — Huston-Tillotson University proudly congratulates two members of the HT community, Gregory N. Bowens, Director of Development & Alumni Engagement with the Institutional Advancement team, and Latari Fleming, Dean of Student Affairs, on their graduation from the African American Leadership Institute (AALI).
Their completion of the program represents another milestone in HT’s longstanding commitment to developing leaders who are prepared to serve, influence, and strengthen communities throughout Austin and beyond.
The African American Leadership Institute provides emerging and established leaders with opportunities to expand their leadership capacity, build meaningful relationships, and deepen their understanding of issues affecting Greater Austin’s African American community. Through the experience, participants engage with leaders and organizations across sectors while strengthening the skills and connections necessary to create lasting community impact.
For Bowens, whose work at Huston-Tillotson centers on cultivating relationships with alumni, supporters, and community partners, the experience further strengthens his ability to connect institutional advancement with meaningful community engagement.
“Leadership is ultimately about relationships, service, and creating opportunities for others to thrive. AALI has strengthened my understanding of what it means to lead with intention and has expanded the relationships and perspectives I can bring back to my work at Huston-Tillotson University.” – Gregory N. Bowens
Fleming’s leadership as Dean of Student Affairs places him at the center of the student experience at HT. His completion of AALI further complements his commitment to developing students not only academically, but as leaders prepared to make an impact in their professions and communities.
“AALI has reminded me that leadership is not simply about the position you hold; it is about how you use your influence to serve people and strengthen community. I’m excited to bring what I’ve learned back to our students and continue helping them recognize the leadership potential within themselves.” – Latari Fleming
Their graduation also reflects the importance of continued professional and leadership development among those who serve Huston-Tillotson University. As Austin continues to grow and change, HT remains committed to ensuring that its faculty, staff, students, and alumni are represented in the conversations and leadership spaces shaping the future of the city.
As Austin’s first institution of higher learning and only historically Black college and university, Huston-Tillotson has a unique connection to the history and future of Black leadership in Central Texas. Bowens and Fleming’s participation in AALI extends that legacy by strengthening the bridge between leadership on Bluebonnet Hill and leadership throughout the Greater Austin community.
Huston-Tillotson University congratulates Gregory N. Bowens and Latari Fleming on this achievement and celebrates their continued commitment to leadership, service, and the advancement of the HT community.
