Huston-Tillotson University Students Place Third at National HBCU Tech Innovation Challenge, Win $15,000

Austin, Texas – Huston-Tillotson University (HT) placed third at the 2026 PROPEL Center Future of Tech Innovation Challenge, a national HBCU competition focused on innovation, artificial intelligence, and career readiness, earning a $15,000 award. Held April 15–17 at Apple headquarters in Austin, the challenge brought together 1,163 students from 14 HBCUs.

Students Anish Lamichhane, Sujal Pandey, and Biraj Lamichhane, competing as the ABS Group, presented Nous, an educational platform designed to strengthen student understanding in an AI-driven learning environment.

Nous addresses a growing issue in education: the gap between completed work and actual understanding. As artificial intelligence and digital tools make answers more accessible, the platform focuses on how students learn, not just what they produce. It identifies gaps in comprehension, supports critical thinking, and tracks progress to encourage more meaningful academic development. By emphasizing process and understanding over final answers, Nous promotes a more effective and student-centered approach to learning in the age of AI.

“This achievement reflects the strength of our students and their ability to apply what they are learning to real-world challenges,” said Dr. Rohan Thompson, dean of the School of Business and Technology and faculty advisor to the team. “They approached this competition with focus, discipline, and a clear understanding of how technology can be used to improve learning outcomes.”

Dr. Jennifer Miles, vice president for student affairs and director of the honors program, said, “This recognition reflects the caliber of our students and their ability to compete and lead in spaces that are shaping the future,” said “They are not only engaging with emerging technology—they are applying it in ways that strengthen learning and create real impact. This achievement underscores the importance of access, opportunity, and strong partnerships. Our students are prepared to lead, innovate, and contribute at the highest levels.”

Huston-Tillotson University signed a partnership agreement with the PROPEL Center in 2025. The PROPEL Center is affiliated with Apple, and the university has been an Apple Community Education Initiatives partner since 2020.
