Huston-Tillotson University Rises in National Rankings, Named #1 Private HBCU in Texas for 2026

Austin, TX (September 23, 2025)  Huston-Tillotson University (HT) has been recognized as the #1 private historically black college and university (HBCU) in Texas for 2026 by U.S. News & World Report.

Other rankings for the upcoming year include; #2 HBCU in Texas, #4 Top Performers on Social Mobility, #20 Best Regional Colleges (West), and #47 HBCU Overall. In 2025, the university also amassed a number of similar rankings.

“As a university, rankings do not define us,” said HT President and CEO Melva K. Wallace. “But moving ten spots up demonstrates the progress, innovation, and bold vision of our institution. This recognition reflects the extraordinary work of our talented educators, dedicated staff, and determined students. At HT, our mission remains the same: transforming lives, cultivating leaders, and advancing scholarship and service in ways that truly matter.”

“We are especially proud to be recognized for social mobility, which highlights how effectively institutions graduate economically disadvantaged students,” said Dr. Archibald Vanderpuye, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “This underscores our commitment to meeting students where they are and providing the resources they need to succeed.”

HT recently garnered national headlines as the recipient of a historic $150 million donation from the Moody Foundation – the largest single gift given to any HBCU ever.

Its offerings include a robust liberal arts and STEM education through market-driven certifications, associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees, alongside centers of excellence.
