Huston-Tillotson President and CEO Melva K. Wallace to Be Honored as Executive Leader of 2025 at Greater Austin Business Awards

Austin, Texas – Huston–Tillotson University (HT) President and CEO Dr. Melva K. Wallace will be one of four to be honored as the Executive Leader of 2025 during the 25th Greater Austin Business Awards (GABA) slated Wednesday, November 19th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the JW Marriott Austin. GABA, the city’s largest annual business event, celebrates exceptional leadership, innovation and business practices across Central Texas.

Wallace will be recognized for her vision, measurable impact, and commitment to diversity and community engagement.

“This honor doesn’t belong to me alone, but to the entire Huston–Tillotson University community, including alumni, donors and friends,” said Dr. Wallace. “It reflects the collaboration and shared vision that have defined this institution for 150 years—and the powerful role education continues to play in shaping the future of Austin and this nation.”

Under Dr. Wallace’s leadership, Huston–Tillotson University—Austin’s oldest institution of higher learning and its only Historically Black University—has entered a phase of transformative growth. Since her appointment as the seventh president, she has steered the institution toward enhanced academic programming, expanded community and industry partnerships, and elevated its role as a catalyst for upward mobility and innovation in Central Texas.

During 2025, HT marked its sesquicentennial with milestone achievements that have elevated the university’s national profile and strengthened its local partnerships.

The university received a historic $150 million gift from the Moody Foundation—the largest single donation ever awarded to any Historically Black College or University in the United States, was named the #1 private HBCU in Texas and earned recognition from U.S. News & World Report as a top school for placing its graduates in high-earning job. or advancing social mobility and academic excellence. In addition, HT launched its master plan for new residence halls and reimagined academic facilities, and goal for expanded scholarship funding made possible through the Moody Foundation’s gift.
