Huston-Tillotson University has approval from the State Board for Educator Certification to prepare candidates for teacher certification in the following content area via the ATCP:

PRIMARY

Core Subjects with STR (Grades 4-8)

*Supplemental Certificates are not stand-alone certifications- A Core Subjects and a single subject certificate is required before seeking a supplemental certificate

**Any subject with STR must take the STR content exam in addition to the content exam

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

  1. Trade and Industrial Education (Grades 6-12)

*** Trade and Industrial Education (Grades 6-12) TAC 233.14

Trades and Industrial Education certificates require work experience.  For initial certification, you must meet the requirements for becoming a classroom teacher in Texas.  Career and Technical Education Chart TAC 233.14(f)(1) requires that candidates seeking CTE certification based on  skill and experience:

A college degree is not required- candidates must complete an approved EPP

  • Option I: A degree from an accredited institution with two years of full-time wage-earning experience within the past ten years in an approved occupation for the classes the candidate will be teaching
  • Option II 1. An associate degree from an accredited institution with two years of full-time wage-earning experience within the past ten years in an approved occupation for the classes the candidate will be teaching
  • Option III: A high school diploma or equivalent with five years of full-time wage-earning
  • experience within the past ten years in an approved occupation for the classes you will be teaching May be added by exam to valid classroom teaching certificate with verified experience and current licensure 
  • Eligible military experience may be used in lieu of civilian experience; your EPP will review for eligibility

Licensure or certification is required. Current licensure by a state or nationally recognized accrediting agency in any approved occupations for the classes the candidate will be teaching; or a passing score on the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute  (NOCTI) (outside source). Cosmetology teachers approved under Options I or II must satisfy the following additional requirements: Option I: Have three years of full-time wage- earning experience as a licensed cosmetologist-Hold a current cosmetology instructor’s license
