ATCP General Admission Requirements

 

General Admission

Bachelor Degree: Hold a bachelor degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education 

Provide an official transcript showing the conferred date of degree with an overall **GPA of  2.5, including a minimum of 12 credit hours in the content area you wish to teach and 15 credit hours for secondary math and Science or a passing score on the PACT (Pre-Admission Content Test)

Foreign Degrees: All foreign degrees must include a course-by-course evaluation, Certification Based on Credentials from another Country | Texas Education Agency and meet the English Language Proficiency requirements, transcripts from a non-U.S. institution must demonstrate English language proficiency skills by submitting an official TOEFL-iBT score report demonstrating scores of at least 24 for speaking, 22 for listening, 22 for reading, and 21 for writing.  See exceptions 19 TAC §230.11(b)(5)(C)

Contingency Admission

Contingency admission is a conditional admission to an educator preparation program in Texas when an applicant meets all admission requirements except for graduation. Applicants who are admitted on a contingent basis can begin program training and take certification exams, but they cannot be recommended for a probationary or intern certificate until they graduate with a bachelor’s degree or higher. applicants must:

  • Be in their final semester of coursework for their bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution
  • Include a letter of completion from their academic advisor or registrar’s office
  • Submit official transcripts up through the previous semester 

Once an applicant has transitioned to full-program admission, they will receive a Statement of Eligibility, which allows them to be hired as a teacher.

Trade and Industrial Education 

*** Trade and Industrial Education (Grades 6-12) TAC 233.14. Trades and Industrial Education certificates require work experience.  For initial certification, you must meet the requirements for becoming a classroom teacher in Texas.  Career and Technical Education Chart TAC 233.14(f)(1) requires that candidates seeking CTE certification based on  skill and experience. All other admission requirements of this title have been met.

Background Clearance: Candidates are required to complete a fingerprint background check prior to employment (19 TAC 227.1(b). A criminal history may jeopardize an individual’s ability to obtain a teacher certification and or employment via a school district. An individual has a right to request a Preliminary Criminal History Evaluation (PCHE) from TEA. Education Agency (TEA).
