Huston-Tillotson University unveils its 10-year strategic plan

Austin, TX – June 6, 2024 – Huston-Tillotson University (HT) recently unveiled its strategic plan for the next decade.  Approved by the HT Board of Trustees, the plan, titled “From First to Foremost: Huston-Tillotson University 2024-2034,” is the culmination of an inclusive process that spanned several months and included the gathering of input from representatives of several key stakeholder groups, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, community and business leaders and local elected officials.

“Our 10-year plan establishes a clear, long-term vision for HT,” said Melva K. Wallace, who is completing her second year as the university’s 7th president.  “It is the blueprint that we will use during the next ten years to solidify our position not only as a premier historically Black university, but as a top institution of higher education in the state of Texas. It sets a focused direction for the 149-year old institution by reinforcing its commitment to Austin and all of the communities it serves, implementing strategic initiatives that reflects HT’s strengths, and underscoring its mission to provide excellent educational opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds, and becoming a major contributor to Austin’s workforce demands and the Texas marketplace.”

The plan focuses on five key strategic priorities: 1) Enrollment and Student Success 2) Expansion of Educational Programs 3) Innovation, Community, and Entrepreneurship 4) Improve Campus Life and Infrastructural Development and 5) Support Transformative University Advancement Enterprises.

During the spring of 2023, Wallace appointed an HT Strategic Planning Steering Committee comprised of faculty, students, staff, administrators and representatives from the local community to reexamine the University’s vision, mission, and core values to ensure their alignment with the future aspirations and mandates of the institution. The group then developed and executed a structured and methodical planning process that included the identification and approval of project tasks, milestones and deliverables. Feedback was collected primarily through surveys, interviews, meetings, forums, and the Ideation Summit.
