Huston-Tillotson University Receives 2024 Architectural Landmark Award from the Texas Society of Architects

Austin, TX – July 22, 2024 – Huston-Tillotson University (HT) has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Architectural Landmark Award from the Texas Society of Architects. The university will be recognized during the group’s 85th annual Conference & Design Expo, scheduled to take place from October 3-5 in Houston.

Founded in 1877, HT stands as Austin’s oldest institution of higher education and holds the distinction of being the only historically Black university in central Texas. In 2022, the university’s campus, featuring 16 buildings, was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, highlighting its significant contribution to the rich heritage of East Austin.

The architecture on the HT campus is more than just visually impressive; it embodies a powerful narrative of empowerment and determination. Notably, some of the campus buildings were designed by the renowned architectural firm Kuehne, Brooks & Barr and its subsequent iterations, while other buildings were envisioned and constructed by the university’s own students.

This award underscores the university’s architectural and cultural significance, while celebrating its enduring legacy and influence in the region.
