Women’s Soccer Team Finishes A History Making Season
Wednesday Aug, 28 2013
Congratulating Alba Mendoza and Erica Ramos for being selected to the 2013-14 Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer “ALL-Tournament”
The Women’s Soccer team was defeated by the University of Texas at Brownsville during their final tournament match. This was an impressive history making season for the Lady Rams and a huge step forward for the team as they ventured into unknown territory for the first time. Despite the defeat, this experience has provided much motivation to go one better again next year and build on the successes of the last four months, expressed by Coach Andrew Tunnicliffe
The Lady Rams defeated Texas College on Saturday in the first round of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) tournament and are heading to Houston this Thursday to compete in the semi-finals of the championship tournament. Rams will play UT-Brownsville on Friday, Nov. 8th @ 3:00 p.m. at the Houston Amateur Sports Park (1231 Kirby Drive, Houston, 77045).

WACO, Texas — Jorge Cantu of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) and Jeminson Mejia (No. 10) of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Sept. 23-29. Marcos Sanchez of HT claimed the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week award for the same dates.
Cantu, a junior forward from Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, Mexico, recorded a hat trick to spur a 3-0 victory for the Saints over non-conference opponent University of Houston-Victoria. Making Cantu’s feat more extraordinary was that he didn’t play in the first half of the game. Shortly after taking the pitch for the second half, he scored in the 47th minute with a shot from his left foot. He added two more goals in the 60th and 67th minute. Cantu nearly added a fourth goal late in the game after dribbling past the goalkeeper, but his attempt was knocked away by a UHV defender. OLLU is 0-1 in conference play and 7-2 overall.
Mejia, a junior midfielder from Tela, Honduras, contributed to all four of HT’s goals in a 2-0 week. He assisted on the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Wiley College (Texas). Mejia then knocked in one goal and assisted on two others in a narrow 3-2 win over Bacone College (Okla.). The Rams climbed to the top of the conference standings at 2-0 with a 3-4-2 mark on the season.
Sanchez, a senior goalkeeper from Guanajuato, Mexico, made eight saves to earn the shutout over Wiley, going 93 minutes in goal for the victory. He also fended off a pair of shots to hold on to the 3-2 win over Bacone. On the season, he has surrendered only two goals while collecting 37 saves.
Karim Abbista of the University of St. Thomas (Texas) was also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week. Angel de la Garza of OLLU and Erik Tello of UST were additional defensive nominees.
