Austin, Texas – September 30, 2024 –HT alumna and Board of Trustees member Andrea Mosie, senior Apollo sample processor and lab manager who oversees the 842 pounds of Apollo lunar samples, accepted the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to all NASA’s Hidden Figures.
The award was presented by House Speaker Mike Johnson during a special ceremony held recently on Capitol Hill during which women who served as computers, mathematicians, and engineers at NASA between the 1930s and 1970s were honored.
“We are incredibly proud of Andrea Mosie for her dedication to space exploration and her contributions to NASA’s legacy,” said HT President Melva K. Wallace. “Her work has deepened our understanding of our universe and inspired future generations of scientists, researchers, and explorers.”
Mosie’s career with NASA spans over four decades, during which she played a critical role in the curation and analysis of lunar samples brought back by the Apollo missions. As a specialist in lunar geology, her expertise has been pivotal in the ongoing study of the Moon’s surface, providing invaluable insights into its composition and history. Mosie has been an essential member of the Lunar Sample Laboratory Facility, where she has worked meticulously to preserve and catalog lunar samples for scientific research and educational purposes.
Her work has helped scientists across the globe unlock the mysteries of the moon, directly contributing to breakthroughs in planetary science and influencing future missions to the moon and beyond. Mosie’s careful handling and preservation of these precious samples have made it possible for new generations of scientists to continue studying lunar material, even decades after the Apollo program.
