HBCU Students and Texas State Representative Ron Reynolds Lead Charge in Forming First-Ever Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus

AUSTIN, Texas – Students and lawmakers will gather at the Texas State Capitol on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 8:30 a.m. to announce the formation of the Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus. Led by HBCU students and Representative Ron Reynolds, the Caucus is dedicated to excellence in education and supporting Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) in Texas. The Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus will serve the following institutions: Paul Quinn College, Wiley College, Huston-Tillotson University, Prairie View A&M University, Texas College, St. Phillip’s College, Jarvis Christian University, Texas Southern University and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and Southwestern Christian College.

The Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus will support the nine HBCUs in Texas and the affiliated fraternities, alumni networks, and graduate institutions/programs. The Caucus aims to assemble a majority in the Texas legislature dedicated to ensuring Texas HBCUs have the resources and the support they need to thrive.

Representative Reynolds, an alumnus of Texas Southern University shared, “As a proud alumnus of Texas Southern University, I am honored to lead the charge in forming the Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus. This Caucus represents our commitment to supporting HBCUs and their efforts to promote strong meaningful citizenship, leadership, and excellence in higher education. Our goal is to ensure that HBCUs in Texas have the necessary resources and support to thrive.”

Dr. Melva K. Williams, President and CEO of Huston-Tillotson University, highlighted the significance and impact of forming the first-ever Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus, “The formation of the Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus is a significant milestone for our HBCU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters. This Caucus signifies a commitment to nurture leadership and excellence in higher education and celebrates the essential role Texas HBCUs play in building a shared Texas future. It is a momentous occasion and represents hope for our students and the greater community.”

The Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus acknowledges HBCUs as democracy schools, reflecting America’s highest democratic aspirations and promoting practices of strong meaningful citizenship for Texans past, present, and future. The press conference to announce the formation of the Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus will be held on April 25, 2023, at 8:30 a.m. at the Texas State Capitol.
