Inaugural Texas HBCU Conference at Huston-Tillotson University

AUSTIN, Texas – This Friday and Saturday (April 1-2), Huston-Tillotson University will host the Inaugural Texas HBCU Conference. This historic event brings Texas HBCUs together with supporters and lawmakers at the state capital to celebrate achievements and chart a path forward. The theme of this historic event will set the conference’s overall tone, “Community-Centered Public Policy, Civically Engaged Higher Education Institutions and the HBCU!”

Seasoned trial lawyer David Henderson of Ellwanger Law will serve as the keynote speaker for the first day of the conference; and State Representative Jasmine Crockett will serve as the keynote speaker for the conference’s second day. Confirmed Texas HBCU Conference attendees include the following lawmakers: State Representative Sheryl Cole, State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, State Representative Jarvis Johnson, State Representative Sarah Eckhardt, State Senator Boris Miles, and State Senator Royce West.

Texas HBCU Conference has several key goals:

  1. Begin a meaningful public conversation about public policy (broadly speaking, at the state level, specifically, and beyond) for creating resources and support for Texas HBCUs both private and public commensurate with the contributions and the role that HBCUs play in building a shared future in Texas;
  2. Center students in every aspect of the conference process, creating opportunities for development of students’ public leadership skills and abilities; and
  3. Paint a picture of meaningful collaborative effort by diverse people and institutions – a picture of public leadership, or bold responsive inclusive (the vision of democracy from American civil rights movement).
