SAGU Hold HT

HT Lady Rams 2-2 Southwestern Assemblies of God (NAIA) – 2OT

This was another exciting contest on the back of two excellent performances from the HT Women’s Soccer team. The first 20 minutes was very evenly poised with both teams having good possession of the ball in dangerous areas.

It was SAGU who took the lead when a block tackle cannoned the ball into the air just inside the penalty area only for the SAGU striker to nod the ball passed HT’s on rushing goalkeeper Ambar Hernandez.

HT took charge of the game from that point on. Some great passing and combinations through the middle released forwards Craft, Palacios and Elizalde on numerous occasions in behind the SAGU back line.  The goal came when Elizalde cut in from the left to square the ball to Palacios who then made no mistake putting the ball into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 at the half.

The second half was much of the same. Solid performances all over the field for HT saw them calve open the SAGU back line over and over again. HT just did not have that killer finish. Then came the sucker punch. SAGU scored on the break with a great ball in from the right wing that was calmly passed into the net for 2-1 against the run of play.

Again the Lady Rams responded and deservedly equalized when full back Daisy Cantera knocked in a great volleyed cross for both Elizalde and Seeliger to challenge the keeper. The ball fell loose and Seeliger wrapped her right foot around it to square the game again, 2-2.

Chance after chance went begging for HT who totally dominated the remainder of the game and both overtime periods. The winning goal just would not come on this occasion so both teams settle for a 2-2 tie.

Another great performance and next up is St. Mary’s from the NCAA DII Heartland Conference on Sunday Sept 28th, 1pm in San Antonio.
