
Texas Brothers Bring Home First Place in International Debate at 2025 Phi Beta Sigma Conclave

Tampa, FL (July 29, 2025) — At the 2025 Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Conclave in Tampa, Florida, two distinguished brothers from the Lone Star State made history. Brother Mason Thompson of the Theta Chapter (Huston-Tillotson University) and Brother Trenton Mosby of the Mu Rho Chapter (University of Texas at Austin) proudly represented Texas and the Gulf Coast Region in the fraternity’s international debate competition, delivering a powerful and persuasive performance that earned them first place honors.
The duo’s victory marks a significant achievement, bringing national recognition to both their institutions and the entire region. Competing against top collegiate minds from across the country, Brothers Thompson and Mosby demonstrated sharp intellect, confident delivery, and a deep commitment to the fraternity’s principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service.
Mason Thompson, a graduating senior from Huston-Tillotson University, hails from Fort Worth, Texas and is majoring in History and Education. A dedicated student leader, Thompson is involved in the NAACP and serves as an active member of the Theta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He previously served as President of the HT National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Passionate about education and equity, Thompson’s goal is to have a career teaching 7th grade history, with the long-term goal of becoming a college professor.
Trenton Mosby, a senior at the University of Texas at Austin, is originally from Lufkin, Texas and is pursuing a degree in Public Health, with a minor in African and African American Diaspora Studies. On campus, Mosby serves as Parliamentarian of the UT NPHC and Treasurer of the Mu Rho Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma. His professional aspirations include becoming a Doctor of Public Health, with a focus on community health and closing racial health disparities.
Their win not only reflects individual excellence but also reinforces the legacy of academic achievement, civic engagement, and cultural pride that Phi Beta Sigma and HBCUs continue to uphold across generations.
