Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. Named HT’s 2022 Commencement Speaker

AUSTIN, Texas – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D., of the 12th Congressional District of North Carolina will deliver the commencement address at Huston-Tillotson University’s 2022 Commencement Convocation on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 9 a.m. The ceremony will be held on the beautiful Huston-Tillotson University campus, located at 900 Chicon Street.

Congresswoman Adams serves on the House Committee on Financial Services; the House Committee on Education  & Labor and as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Agriculture. She is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus, and she was instrumental in the enactment of H.R. 5363, the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act, which permanently provides funding totaling $255 million a year for all Minority-Serving Institutions, including $85 million for HBCUs to include Huston-Tillotson University.

Congresswoman Adams graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in 1968 and received her master’s degree in Art Education in 1972. She earned her Ph.D. in Art Education and Multicultural Education from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 1981.

Commencement Convocation occurs in conjunction with Huston-Tillotson University’s Honors Convocation and Reunion Weekend 2022 activities. Honors Convocation recognizing students who have excelled in the classroom and contributed in unique ways to the University is scheduled on Friday, May 5 at 10 a.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Church, located at 4301 Tannehill Ln., Austin,Texas. This year’s speaker is Dr. DeVry Anderson who serves as the St. David’s South AustinMedical Center Chief Medical Officer and a member of the Huston-Tillotson University Board ofTrustees. Reunion Weekend activities begin on Thursday, May 5 with a golf tournament at theMorris Williams course, in addition to events scheduled at the reunion weekend headquarters

In addition to the ceremony for the 2022 graduates, HT’s 50th year Class of 1972 will be honored at the graduation program and throughout the weekend festivities in addition to members of classes ending in 2s and 7s.
