 Rental a Text Program

Huston-Tillotson University Bookstore Rent-A-Text Program

How Does the Rent-A-Textbook Program Work?
The textbook rental program is a service provided by Follett in order to offer flexibility and savings for students and parents purchasing textbooks.

What is the Difference Between Purchasing and Renting Textbooks?
Most students won’t notice the differences between renting and purchasing. Renting textbooks will help students save money and help support strong learning habits by making it easier for students to get all of their textbooks when they need them.

How Do I Complete the Rental Process?
Start the process by visiting www.htu.edu and following “Campus Links” to “Bookstore” where you will be directed to the rental registration page. You will need a credit card in your name to begin the process. You may also look for the “Rent-A-Text” stickers next to the listings in the campus bookstore.  Rental eligible titles are selected based upon the saturation of the title, breadth of the customers using the title, type of textbook, and expected textbook life span. If your textbook is a rental eligible title, you may secure it online or in person at the bookstore by using your HT textbook voucher, or with a credit card, debit card, by check, and/or with cash.

What if My Textbook is not on the Rental List?
Follett is working hard with HT professors and textbook publishers to identify as many rental titles as possible. Generally speaking, a textbook needs to be a popular title early in its lifecycle (a recently released edition) to be rentable. The good news is that these are the types of textbooks that you may have generally had to buy “New” in the past, so hopefully you’ll really feel the savings!

May I Write in or Highlight a Rented Textbook?
Yes, Because students have varying learning styles, it’s acceptable to write in and/or highlight your rented textbook.  However, any excessive markings that would render the textbook unusable for the next customer are unacceptable.

What If I Drop a Class?
The normal rental refund policy applies, if your textbook is rented and you drop a class. The textbook needs to be in the same condition issued and you will need a copy of your receipt.

What is the Return Date?
Check and keep your receipt for the return date.  You will have plenty of time throughout the semester and through finals to utilize your textbook to its fullest.  There will also be a sticker on the textbooks that you rent, AND you will receive an email reminder.

What If I Fail to Return My Rented Textbook?
If you don’t return your textbooks by your bookstore’s return date (shown on your receipt packing slip), your credit card or subsequent book voucher will be charged a non-return fee as well as a processing fee. The textbook will be yours, which means you have some options. If you want to keep it, feel free. Otherwise, you can always attempt to sell your textbook back for top dollar.

Do I Have to Rent my Textbooks?
The textbook rental program is another option for HT students.  You may choose to purchase new or used textbooks as you have previously.

When Do I Need to Rent/Purchase Textbooks
You may purchase your textbook at anytime after securing your course schedule.  Visit www.htu.edu and follow “Campus Links” to “Bookstore” where you will see the “Textbooks and Course Materials” tab on the Follett page. Some students like to purchase books after classes start and some professors require the textbook on the first day of classes.
