What to bring and not to bring to the Residence Halls

Please note that all students are required to live on campus, unless they reside in the Austin area with a legal guardian, are married and living with their spouse, are a veteran with a minimum of two years active military service, are responsible for one more dependent children living with you, are 23 years of age or older, are the legal owner of a home in the Austin area, or have 60 or more credit hours from HT, and/or 6 hours accepted by HT if you are a transfer student.  All dependent students who receive Institutional Scholarships that meet or exceed tuition are required to love on campus. Orientation is designed to assist students in transition into the University; therefore, all events are mandatory and prompt arrival is essential. Although orientation is specifically designed for first-year students (anyone with fewer  than 30 earned credit hours), all students are welcome to attend events/activities. Student Portal training (myhtu) for Transfer students will be held.  Check back for the date and time.

Assessment allows the University to determine in which Math and English courses students should register. Typically, first-time students with certain high school exit examination scores or college entrance exam scores are exempt from assessment. First-time students and transfer students who have passed a college level Math and English course will be exempt from those portions of the assessment.

Registration allows students access to their personal MyHTU account, enroll in classes, pay tuition and fees, and obtain a student ID card.

Parents: There is a specific orientation designed just for you scheduled.  Check back for the date and time. Make preparations to stay for the New Student Matriculation Ceremony on Thursday, August 22 at 11 a.m. in King-Seabrook Chapel. 

Reminders:

• Retrieve your final official transcript
• Mail in your health form and retrieve immunization records
• Fill out and mail a housing application or housing waiver
• Pay $150 housing deposit
• Shop for items to bring
• Secure business attire (dark suit and matching tie for men; tailored suit for women)

You will receive your housing assignment in the mail.  Your prompt payment of the $150 deposit and proof of immunization records assures your room assignment on a first-come, first served basis.  For residence hall inquiries, please contact the staff at 512.505.6411 or admission@htu.edu.

Admission Reminders

Bring final official transcripts to orientation.  Students will not be allowed to register if final documents have not been received in the admissin office. 

Health

All admitted students are required to show proof of medical coverage or they must purchase coverage from the University carrier before completing the registrationprocess.  In accordance with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, a student shall show acceptable evidence of vaccination to include Bacterial Meningitis prior to entry, attendance, or transfer to a  private institution of higher education. Homecoming Wrap Up

HT’s 2013 Homecoming “All In” began with Sunday worship service at Gethsemane Lutheran Church where students learned its historic honor as the oldest Lutheran church in Austin. Student Government Association officers, University Ambassadors, and other student leaders, including “Mr. and Miss HT,” unified to recognize the important distinguished religious feature that makes up Huston-Tillotson University.

Homecoming week was filled with interactive events that allowed students to be all in during this year’s celebration. Monday was the official start to campus homecoming events starting with students’ creative juices flowing for the school wide Door Decorating Contest and Paint the Town to highlight their organizations on campus. Students “Rammed the Run-way” in the fashion show held Tuesday, showcasing HT’s style.

HT Turns Up 2013 Homecoming
with Elle Varner and Kirko Bangz

HT students were surprised when they learned that the Grammy-nominated songstress Elle Varner and Houston born rapper Kirko Bangz would be performing in their very own Mary E. Branch Gymnasium. The concert took place Thursday, February 7, 2013, where nearly 200 supporters including students, faculty, and East Austin friends enjoyed the show. Fans filed into the campus’s gym that was transformed into a concert venue.

HT Names the 2013 Homecoming King and Queens

HT announced its 2013-2014 Homecoming King and Queen during the traditional pep rally. The final ballot count showed Chris Edwards and Allisiana Davis as the winners. Edwards, a sophomore, is a member of HT’s basketball team and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Davis, a junior, is a resident assistant, University Ambassador, and a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Congratulations to both of these outstanding HT student leaders.

Incoming Spring 2013 students, remember to bring:

•  A copy of your Bacterial Meningitis vaccine. (Please note this vaccine must be completed at least 10 days prior to the start of the semester). 

•  A health form completed and signed by a physician or a complete copy of your physical for the current year.

•  Proof of medical insurance.

•  Student insurance as required, if you will be enrolled in at least 12 hours. HT offers affordable student insurance, if needed.

New Student Orientation

All orientation events are mandatory for first-year students.

The faculty, staff, and students at Huston-Tillotson University look forward to welcoming you and introducing you to our campus.  The orientation program is designed to help students better adjust to the HT experience, academic expectations, social life, the City of Austin, campus culture, residence life, and other areas. 

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I move into the residence hall?  
Move in Aug. 15 at 9 a.m.

What is the dress for orientation?  Except for the matriculation ceremony on Sunday, which requires business attire, casual dress is appropriate for orientation.

Is orientation mandatory for first-year and transfer students? FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENT, ALL ORIENTATION EVENTS ARE MANDATORY as each program is designed to assist you in your transition into the University. 

Does a new student need the University’s health insurance? No.  however, if you elect not to receive the University’s insurance plan, you must bring proof of another insurance carrier at the time of orientation.

Students who complete the process will be ready for move in during New Student Orientation scheduled August 15-19.  The on campus New Student Orientation is designed in concert with the University’s three persistence programs:  Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), the President’s Male Achievement and Persistence (MAP), and Women Advancing in Leadership and Knowledge (WALK).  The programs offer a college readiness system that provides the necessary tools designed to accelerate academic performance. 

The New Student Orientation schedule includes sessions for students and parents, placement testing, a Matriculation Ceremony, and other campus activities prior to the start of classes on Monday, August 20.

Huston-Tillotson University offers Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in biology, business administration, communication, chemistry, computer science, computer information systems, criminal justice, English, education, history, kinesiology, mathematics, music, music education, political science, psychology, and sociology.  A minor can be earned in most disciplines, including religions studies and African and African American Studies.
