Meet our 2013- 2014 Interns
Ms. Shay Bell -Spring 2014
Howdy! My name is Shay Bell and I’m from The Woodlands, Texas, which is about 30 miles north of Houston, Texas. I moved to Austin and became a student at Huston-Tillotson University during the fall of 2011. I’m a junior at the School of Business & Technology and my concentration of study is marketing.
I chose marketing because I believe entrepreneurship promotes self sufficiency and effective marketing strategies are an asset in the success of a company. After graduation, I desire to utilize my HT education—including my experience with my internship—to assist underrepresented people who have an interest in becoming entrepreneurs. On a personal note, my interest in marketing directly speaks to my goal to become a business owner. My education in marketing will allow me to identify my target market, advertise, and formulate strategies to attract them to my product as well as retain them as customers. Currently 10% of a company’s revenue is spent on marketing and 70% of companies have a chief marketing technologist. (Gartner, 2013)
The OIPRA internship that is offered at HT will assist me with supplementing my goals by providing me with hands on experience in certain areas that are critical in marketing such as researching and planning.
In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, as one of my favorite athletes is Serena Williams. I also enjoy baking, exploring new and interesting vegan recipes, exploring Austin, and challenging myself to attend popular events such as SXSW and ACL.
Ms. D’Anna Hargrave – Fall 2013, Spring 2014
My name is D’Anna Hargrave. I am a native of Kenner, Louisiana, but moved to Houston, Texas at the age of 8. I’m a graduate of Pearland High School and currently attending Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. I transferred to Huston-Tillotson and have begun working towards obtaining my Bachelor’s degree. I am currently classified as a Junior at Huston-Tillotson. While attending Huston-Tillotson, I work and intern in the Office of Institutional Planning, Research and Assessment Office. OIPRA offers me the opportunity to engage with the professional Institutional Research practices of Universities. It provides me the opportunity to recruit participants, as well as, collect, analyze and report data for the purposes of institutional improvement. Throughout the internship a data-driven project is completed based upon a topic of interest related to my field of study, which is Accounting. My expected graduation date Huston-Tillotson is in May 2016 with a B.A. in Accounting.
Once I graduate, I definitely plan on attending graduate school; however, I haven’t decided exactly which school I will attend. I have considered enrolling in South Texas College of Law to study Tax Law and obtain my law degree. As an added incentive, my mother works there and my tuition would be free! Most importantly, my ultimate educational and career goals are to graduate, obtain my CPA and have my own Tax Firm.
