Morial is viewed as the catalyst for the changes occurring in the nearly 100-year old civil rights organization—The National Urban League—emphasizing closing racial and economic gaps.  His creativity has led to initiatives such as the Urban Youth Empowerment Program to assist young adults in securing sustainable jobs, and Entrepreneurship Centers in five cities to help the growth of small businesses. Also, Morial created the National Urban League’s Empowerment Fund, which has pumped almost $200 million into urban impact businesses, including minority businesses through both debt and equity investments.

Morial is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Economics and African American Studies.  He also holds a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington D.C. and has several honorary degrees. He teaches Constitutional Law and Business Law as an adjunct faculty at Xavier University in Louisiana.

His political accomplishments include winning the Louisiana State Bar Association Award for his legal services for the poor and disadvantaged.  At age 26, he was the youngest lawyer to argue and win a major case before the Louisiana Supreme Court.  He was named Legislative Rookie of the Year, Education Senator of the Year, and Environmental Senator of the Year, while authoring laws on a wide range of important subjects.  Morial led the New Orleans renaissance of the 1990s as mayor of the city, improving urban issues, reducing violent crimes and murders, and cutting the unemployment rate in half while reducing poverty rates.

Currently, he serves as an executive committee member of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the Black Leadership Forum, and Leadership 18; and is a board member of the Muhammad Ali Center and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.  He has been recognized as one of the 100 most influential black Americans by Ebony magazine, as well as one of the Top 50 Nonprofit Executives by the Nonprofit Times.

The symposium will be preceded at 11 a.m. on April 4 by a joint worship experience with the Huston-Tillotson University Office of Religious Life and the Austin Baha’i Community celebrating the Seventh Annual Symposium. This worship service will take place in the King-Seabrook Chapel and will be lead by Reverend Donald Brewington, Chaplain of HT.

The Keynote Speaker for this Year’s Symposium

Dr. Monya Stubbs, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary

Monya A. Stubbs is an ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and serves as an Associate Professor of New Testament at Austin Seminary. She is a graduate of Spelman College and received her MTS and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Stubbs is the author of a numbers of books and essays, including A Contextual Introduction to the Gospel of Matthew and its Readings (co-author, Abingdon Press, 2003) and Indebted Love: Paul’s Rhetorical Strategy in Romans (Pickwick Publications, forthcoming, Spring 2013) and a host of essays that range from an essay on “Healing Through Touch” in My Soul is a Witness (Beacon Press, 1995) to her most recent publication, “1 Thessalonians” featured in the revised and updated Women’s Bible Commentary (Westminster John Knox Press, 2012). Stubbs’ teaching interests include a wide range of New Testament subjects, with an emphasis on Pauline Literature and interpretive methods in New Testament Studies. She also teaches on topics such as theological themes in contemporary novels, theology and the economy, and the intersections of faith and politics.

Stubbs is the founder and former director of Bonner-Campbell Religious Studies Institute, a ministerial training school for the Eighth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She has also served as a faculty team member for the field education program at Vanderbilt University, where she facilitated students’ theological reflection on events in ministry. Stubbs serves on the board of Texas Impact, an advocacy organization sponsored by Christian and Jewish groups which promote public policies that enhance freedom, justice, and economic equality.

Other distinguished participants include Dr. Larry L. Earvin, President, Dr. Michael Hirsch, Dr. James Kraft, and Reverend Donald Brewington from Huston-Tillotson University; Beverly Reeves, District Ombudsman from Austin ISD; Rosalie Ip, a teacher of the year in Austin ISD, graduate student at UT Austin in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and a member of the Austin Social Justice Teacher Inquiry Group; Dee Lewis, distinguished community member; and Michael Stevens and Linda O’ Dell, members of the Austin Baha’i Community.

Honoring Louis G. Gregory–Champion and Pioneer of Race Unity in America

Louis George Gregory (1874 – 1951), a descendent of black slaves and white slave owners, devoted his life to championing unity among the races in the United States of America during the early 1900s. Gregory’s maternal grandmother was “wholly of African blood” and his maternal grandfather was the white owner of the Darlington County plantation where she labored. Gregory was influenced during his entire life by his grandmother who drew on her profound spiritual beliefs and chose not to hate, even after the death of her blacksmith husband at the hands of the Klansmen.

Louis Gregory’s education at the Avery institute, Fisk University, and then Howard University’s School of Law established him as one of the “Talented Tenth,” the term coined by W.E. B. Dubois for capable and educated African Americans of the time.

Louis Gregory set aside a life of relative ease to teach the principles and beliefs of the Baha’i Faith, particularly the oneness of humanity. On one of his trips to Texas in 1920 as a traveling speaker on the subject of race unity, Gregory visited Austin and spoke at the two black colleges, Samuel Houston College and Tillotson Institute, as well as Anderson High School.

Because of Louis Gregory’s lifelong dedication to education and race unity, the Baha’i Faith of Austin, in collaboration with Huston-Tillotson University, wishes to honor him with this symposium at HT, the institution resulting from the merging of the two colleges in Austin at which he spoke so long ago.

This year’s theme:  Contributing to a Diverse Community: What Can You Do For Your Country/Community?

Downs-Jones Library is undergoing a complete renovation to include an all new interior with open spaces and study areas. The new facility will house HT’s RAM café with coffee and snack selections in addition to the books, publications, videos, and artwork. The central circulation desk will be surrounded by a central master staircase with glass handrails and innovative interior architectural walls. Downs-Jones Library, built in 1960, was named for Dr. Karl Everett Downs, President of Samuel Huston College from 1943-1948; and Dr. William H. Jones, President of Tillotson College from 1944-1952. Tenth Annual W.E.B. DuBois Lecture Featuring Eli Reed

Award-winning photographer and photojournalist Eli Reed is the featured lecturer for the Annual W.E.B. DuBois program.  Reed will visit with HT students and the HT community during a master’s class and lecture scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the A-L Auditorium.  Later, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. there will be an unveiling of his photography exhibit in Viaer – Alumni Hall. Reed will also autograph limited-edition photographs and his book for purchase.  Reed studied at Harvard University, currently teaches at UT, and was a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography runner up in 1982. He received the 2011 Lucie Award for Achievement in Documentary Photography.

The event features some of the world’s most popular and outstanding musicians who donate their time and talent to benefit HT. This annual fundraiser supports educational programs and scholarships for students attending Huston-Tillotson University.

Homecoming Wrap Up

HT’s 2013 Homecoming “All In” began with Sunday worship service at Gethsemane Lutheran Church where students learned its historic honor as the oldest Lutheran church in Austin. Student Government Association officers, University Ambassadors, and other student leaders, including “Mr. and Miss HT,” unified to recognize the important distinguished religious feature that makes up Huston-Tillotson University.

Homecoming week was filled with interactive events that allowed students to be all in during this year’s celebration. Monday was the official start to campus homecoming events starting with students’ creative juices flowing for the school wide Door Decorating Contest and Paint the Town to highlight their organizations on campus. Students “Rammed the Run-way” in the fashion show held Tuesday, showcasing HT’s style.

HT Turns Up 2013 Homecoming

HT students were surprised when they learned that the Grammy-nominated songstress Elle Varner and Houston born rapper Kirko Bangz would be performing in their very own Mary E. Branch Gymnasium. The concert took place Thursday, February 7, 2013, where nearly 200 supporters including students, faculty, and East Austin friends enjoyed the show. Fans filed into the campus’s gym that was transformed into a concert venue.

HT Names the 2013 Homecoming King and Queens

HT announced its 2013-2014 Homecoming King and Queen during the traditional pep rally. The final ballot count showed Chris Edwards and Allisiana Davis as the winners. Edwards, a sophomore, is a member of HT’s basketball team and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Davis, a junior, is a resident assistant, University Ambassador, and a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Congratulations to both of these outstanding HT student leaders.

Mosley will address the faith community’s response to human sexuality, especially sexual pluralism and non-hetero expressions of sexuality under the topic, “Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby: Human Sexuality and the Black Church Experience.” Mosley mentions that the black faith community must address issues of human sexuality, if the church desires to retain its historic prominence in black life.

Gammon, the United Methodist component of The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC),  is considered by many as the world’s premier resource for black religious scholarship and faith-based solutions to the spiritual and socio-economic challenges confronting the African American community.

Prior to being named the President of Gammon, Mosley served as the University Chaplain and Director of the Multi-Faith Studies Program at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Before his appointment at The Johns Hopkins University, Mosley served as Director of the Center for Civic Engagement and Professor in the Penonni Honors College of Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA), teaching courses ranging from comparative ethics to public life and leadership.

Mosley was born and raised in rural Mississippi.  He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of United Methodist-related Millsaps College and has also earned degrees from Duke University and Yale University.  He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the William J. Griffith Distinguished University Service Award given by Duke University and the Distinguished Preaching Award given by Duke Divinity School.

Dixon, for which the lecture is named, is one of two HT graduates to receive “bishop” status.  He graduated magna cum laude from what was Samuel Huston College in 1943 before earning a degree from Drew Theological Seminary. He served the church and community in numerous positions while establishing innovative programs before and after becoming president of Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas. He retired in 1992 and died in 1996. Huston-Tillotson is affiliated with The United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and offers a minor in religious studies.

While serving as Assistant U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark helped draft the 1965 Voting Rights Act and headed the Presidential Task Force to Watts following the riots.  Currently Ramsey Clark travels the world investigating war crimes and visiting with the families of political prisoners.  He is the author of several books including The Fire this Time: U.S. War Crimes in the Gulf (1992) and Crime in America (1970). 

His presentation is being sponsored the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.  His talk is free and open to the public.
