Go to RetoolYourSchool.com and vote for HT.

Home Depot’s HBCU Campus Improvement Program includes a popularity vote as a component for grant awards. Only one of the three program awards is based entirely on popular vote, but votes are a component of the other two programs. We need your votes to help insure that at least two of our proposals have a chance to be funded.

Click RetoolYourSchool.com to vote. Find HT on the list of 66 schools and vote for HT. You can vote once each day. Please vote every day between now and April 10. We want to move HT into the top 20, and it will take you voting every day to do that.

Ask your friends to vote for HT too. Post this on your Facebook page. Forward this message to your family, friends, and all the groups you belong to.

Roland Carter and Allen Todd to Perform with the Huston-Tillotson University Concert Choir
During a Collaborative Black History Month Celebration

The maestro of the world’s most popular arrangement of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” Roland Carter, will perform during the Black History Month celebration that features three concert choirs and guest singer Allen F. Todd, II. The Huston-Tillotson University Concert Choir, under the direction of Gloria Quinlan, the Prairie View A&M University Concert Chorale, led by A. Jan Taylor, and the Butler School of Music Concert Chorale at the University of Texas, conducted by Suzanne Pence, will perform collectively on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bates Recital Hall, 2420 Robert Dedman Drive.

Carter, noted as an authority on the performance and preservation of African American music, is a distinguished composer, conductor, educator, and pianist with his works performed by orchestras and choirs throughout the world. “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” written by James Weldon Johnson as a poem and set to music by John Johnson is considered the Negro National Anthem for its expression of pride, patriotism, and promise for the future. Carter is the Ruth S. Holmberg Professor of American Music in the Department of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). His accomplishments as a leading figure in the choral arts include concerts with major choruses and orchestras in prestigious venues nationwide as well as lectures, workshops, and master classes. From presidential inaugurations to the smallest church, from scholarly presentations for national gatherings of musicians, educators, and preservationists to private coaching with individual singers, Carter’s musical brilliance is enjoyed by all.

Carter is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mar-Vel, a music publisher specializing in the music of African American Composers and traditions. He has directed the Chattanooga Choral Society for the Preservation of African American Song for 19 years, and served as music advisor and principle guest conductor of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild, Houston, Texas, for 12 years.

The concert will also feature Allen Franklin Todd, II, an accomplished composer who has written numerous gospel, worship, and praise selections. Todd serves as the Music Area Coordinator, Assistant Professor of Music, and Director of the Lemoyne-Owen College Concert Choir. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia; the Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Choral Conducting from the College of Music Arts at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio; and the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Performance with concentrations in Opera Studies, Choral Conducting and Voice from the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee.

The HT Concert Choir continues the University’s proud heritage of world-class performing ensembles. The current choir, the greater number of whom are music majors, performs a wide variety of music, including works from the classical choral repertoire, spirituals, gospel, and jazz. Quinlan joined the HT faculty in 1998 and serves as Professor of Music. She has conducted the choir before national audiences and on the world stage. Suzanne Pence joined the UT faculty in 1996 and serves as Director of Admissions for the Butler School of Music in addition to her teaching assignments. She is active as an adjudicator, and clinician/festival conductor in the midwest and the southeast.

Huston-Tillotson University, with roots dating to 1875, is Austin’s first institution of higher education.

The concert is free and open to the public. Parking is available at the San Jacinto Garage.

Marbury" width="109" height="150" />

Campus Ministry will launch the University’s Black History Month programming with a lecture, featuring Dr. Herbert R. Marbury, Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible at Venderbilt University (pictured).

As the black church declines in membership, many are raising questions about its usefulness. If the black church is to reclaim its place as a powerful center in the community, then the next generation must ask the right questions. Four decades ago, Marvin Gaye asked the critical question, “What’s Going On?” This lecture asks Gaye’s question at intersection of civic and spiritual engagement between the black church and a black community still in crisis and raises questions for the legacy of the Joshua generation.

Marbury is Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible at Vanderbilt University. He holds a doctorate degree in Religion from Vanderbilt University, and the Master of Divinity degree from Gammon Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center. He spent his undergraduate years at Emory University studying English and African American Studies. His research interests include History of the Second Temple Period, Biblical Rhetoric, and African American Biblical Interpretation.

Marbury, a fifth generation Methodist minister, has taught Hebrew and Biblical Interpretation at American Baptist College and Vanderbilt University Divinity School. He has served as a mentor in the Doctor of Ministry Program at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, for the program group “The Black Church and Social and Civic Empowerment.” He has lectured and presented his scholarship at campuses, professional conferences, and churches around the globe.

Currently, Marbury is working on the manuscript for a book on African American Biblical Interpretation. An ordained elder in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church, Marbury is the former pastor of Old National United Methodist Church in Riverdale, Georgia. Prior to moving to Nashville, he served as University Chaplain at Clark Atlanta where, in 2004, he was named the Chaplain of the Year by The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation for all 120 United Methodist Church related colleges and universities. In 2006, Marbury joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he teaches Old Testament, Hebrew, Biblical Hermeneutics, and Black Religion.

For more information, contact Rev. Donald Brewington, University Chaplain, 512.344.9380. Free and open to the public.

On Sunday, November 6th an event called “Is Local News Serving Your Community? A Public Forum in East Austin on the Crisis of Local Media Coverage,” will take place from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. in the Agard-Lovinggood Auditorium.

It is presented by the University of Texas School of Journalism and is co-sponsored by HT’s new communication major and KAZI community radio.

The event is triggered by a recent Federal Communication Commission (FCC) report that surveyed the United States media landscape following the digital revolution. The findings show a sharp decline in local news coverage and especially a loss of original reporting and accountability journalism. The report is of particular cause for concern for underserved communities like East Austin.

Long-time journalist Steve Waldman, who worked as a correspondent for Newsweek for many years and served as national editor for US News and World Report, was one of the authors of this report. He will present the main findings. Then, a panel of media and journalism experts will discuss their insights. Finally, we’ll open it up to the public for discussion with a focus on building solutions.

SPEAKERS & PANELISTS INCLUDE:

Presiding: Glenn Frankel, Director, UT School of Journalism
Featuring: Steve Waldman, Author and Journalist, FCC Working Group
Moderating: Dr. Laura K. Smith, Asst. Professor of Communication, HT

Panelists:

Michael Fabac, News Director, KXAN-TV

KAZI Community Radio (panelist TBA)

Alberta Phillips, Editorial Writer and Columnist, Austin American Statesman
