Like Dirt for Chocolate

by Mezzie Edmondson-Ochoa

Dark and rich, the texture of dirt.
Rich and dark, the taste of chocolate.
My fingers dance, cup and curl.
I revert melting (sweet, bitter) from a solid state.

Squares, drops, kisses, bars, truffles– silky
organic and inorganic in my mouth,
melting; decomposing nutrients

arouse my senses, within me
nourish my soul; cover me
with chocolate dreams like a willow.
Mother Earth, a brown-skinned girl

reaps what she sows, sweet milk,
dark and fine, like dirt
for chocolate, cocoa divine.
