Lady Ram’s volleyball begin season dropping two matches at UMHB tournament.

Belton, TX — The Lady Rams volleyball team started their 2013 season by losing to a pair of NCAA III teams beginning with the University of Mary Hardin Baylor (UMHB) 10-25, 20-25, 12-25 and East Texas Baptist University (ETBU) 11-25, 15-25, 12-25 on Friday, August, 30.
In the first match against UMHB, freshman setter A’Kia Mumphrey (Longview/Longview HS) directed the Lady Rams offense with 17 assists with help from senior setter Olivia Sanchez (San Antonio/Palo Alto CC) with 9 assists. Junior transfer Octavia Golden (Dallas/Trinity Valley CC) led the Lady Rams with 8 kills while freshman D’Janae Robinson (San Antonio/Northwest Vista College) added 7 kills. On the defensive side, senior libero Amber Green (San Antonio/Roosevelt HS) had 11 digs with support from Robinson and Sanchez, each with 9 digs.
In the second match against ETBU, the Lady Rams struggled a little with a new lineup with Sanchez and Mumphrey only producing 7 and 5 assists respectively. Robinson had 4 kills along with Golden’s 3 kills to give the Lady Rams their offense.
Coach Ronnie Kaase, when asked why such a tough set of matches to begin the season with commented, “The 2013 Lady Rams are building a new and exciting program and is using this tournament to develop the right player combination in order to compete at the highest level. You cannot excel or get better unless you play higher ranked teams”.
Next Opponents: The Lady Rams continue competition at the UMHB tournament with matches against Hardin Simmons University at 10:00 am and the University of Texas-Dallas at 2:30 pm in Belton on Saturday, August 31.
